Reuse the past; recycle the present, save the future!

CPS Global Thirumazhisai hosts an exclusive club dedicated to environmental conservation, known as “We Mean Green.” The club members, consisting of students from various grade levels, convene biweekly to partake in a range of activities and projects aimed at promoting sustainability and preserving our planet.

For the youngest learners in CAIE 1 & 2, educational activities such as coloring sessions and word search were organized to instil awareness about environmental protection. Additionally, they engaged in window gardening to learn hands-on about nurturing nature.

Students in CAIE 3, 4, and 5 embarked on creative projects, including crafting collages highlighting environmental issues and constructing paper mache models of endangered species like ladybirds and owls. They also made bird feeders from reusable resources to support local wildlife.

Taking on a larger endeavour, students in CAIE 6, 7, 8, and IG 1 undertook a significant project utilizing discarded plastic water bottles. Collecting approximately 200 bottles, they repurposed them into tables, including a standee table for the reception area and smaller reading tables for the library. Head of School, Ms Sreedevi Varakavi received the tables and signed a pledge to reduce the usage of plastic bottles.  An awareness session on marine pollution further underscored the importance of recycling, with students creating a collage depicting the impact of plastic waste on marine life.

The culmination event brought together all club members to reflect on their year-long journey. To commemorate the day facilitators were honored with custom-made badges crafted from leaves. Entertainment was provided by CAIE 1 & 2 students through nature-themed songs, while CAIE 7 students distributed seed bombs and demonstrated innovative ways of growing plants, even in teacups. Recycled materials were showcased through games like tic-tac-toe and bowling pins, and students showcased their creativity with a fashion show featuring dresses made from newspapers. The event also featured  informative presentations on exotic plant, animal species and genetically modified organisms, including models of coral reefs and discussions on their preservation. Students of IGCSE Year 1 made lots of innovative projects using plastic bottles – Hanging planters to grow micro greens, Self-watering planters, paper plates and pots using paper mache. They demonstrated drip irrigation and made an ant colony to observe red ants for their movements. They made pen holders using discarded plastic bottles to be given for teachers. Overall, it was a memorable culmination of the We Mean Green club, celebrating nature and taking a pledge to conserve it for the future.
