“In the history of science, we often find that the study of some natural phenomenon
has been the starting point in the development of a new branch of knowledge”.
                                                                                                                             – Sir C V Raman
It was February 1928, C V Raman and his accomplice working at the lab witnessed a
deflected light and got amused by its altered wavelength cum frequency; they christened this
beam of light,“modified scattering” which went on to earn the sobriquet, the Raman Effect.
Little did they know that this modified scattering was all set to modify the nation’s standing in
the arena of science. To commemorate the National Science day, CPS Global School,
Thiumazhisai organized the SIMILO 2023, the annual science fest to kindle the scientific
temperament amongst the students. This year, the festturned out to be more impactful with
the plethora of competitions and activities. The students wereencouraged to participate in
Science Journaling, an activity which was open for CAIE 3 to CAIE 4 students and Drop Box
Quizthat was availableforevery student and teacher alike. While the Science Journaling
activity required the students to painstakingly select the science columns of Times of
IndiaNewspaper in Education (NIE) and make a journal using the paper clippings of the
February month editions, the Drop Box Quiz made it obligatory to check the notice board for
scientific queries and drop in the answers written over a chit. The consistent participants who
attempted to give answers for the most number of questions were lauded with a certificate
and a token of appreciation alongside the winners from various other events. The usage of
digital videos has become a regular practice in today’s education system and their
tremendous influence over the present generation is undeniable. To get students abreast
with latest occurrences in the world of science, the school resorted to follow the recent trend
of using science centric videos whose themes ranged from simple machines to natural
resources. The videos were shared a fortnight prior to the SIMILO quiz contest to allow them
prepare for the Quiz which was solely based on the videos and science columns from the
February editions of NIE.The inquiry based science model presentation was allocated for the
students of CAIE 5 to CAIE 8 and they were instructed to come up with a model whose
working mechanism can be ably demonstrated. They were expected to submit a research
proposal and the models that ticked all the checks in the criteria became eligible for display.
The senior students of IGCSE and IBDP joined hands for developing an Android/ IOS
Application software that can aid in identifying the flora present in the campus and
demonstrated the practicality of the appduring a particular segment devoted for the
presentation of the App builders viz., Harpith Pandian, Harpita Pandian and Aniruddha V.
Reddy. The software is still in its nascent stage as the students wish to include almost every
inconspicuous and alluring flora from the campus.

The celebrations culminated with a special assembly on the National Science day, February
28 th 2023. The Head of School, Ms.Jayu Ganesh in her address urged the students to
continue accumulating ideas and maintain a journal that brims with information pertaining to
Science. The IGCSE year 1 students hosted the assembly and crooned a mellifluous cum
peppy version of the periodic table song which was received with thunderous applause from
the audience. The assembly was concluded with a positive note as the students vowed to
continue staying motivated about Science and remain well-versed with the scientific
advancements and conduct Science whenever the situation warrants irrespective of the
sophistications at hand which was akin to the words of Sir C V Raman that states, “the
essence of Science is independent thinking, hard work and not equipment.”
