Triangles aren’t just mathematically significant, they are also fundamental to the way we build our environments, both physical and virtual. Triangles are particularly important because polygons with more sides can be decomposed into triangles.
Understanding how to classify triangles helps students recognize patterns and relationships among geometric shapes, which is fundamental in geometry and can aid in problem-solving and reasoning skills. Grade 4 learners participated in a hands-on activity that combined creativity with critical thinking: building and classifying different types of triangles using popsicle sticks. The goal of the activity was to help students learn how to classify triangles based on their side lengths and angles by constructing them from popsicle sticks. This classification of the properties helped our students in learning symmetrical properties which enabled them in creating tessellating patterns with triangles.
