Magic bean in a jar @ CPSGS, ANN

Written by cpsglobalblog

Growing beans is a wonderfully simple science activity to do. Kids will love watching their own magic beanstalk grow right in front of their eyes. There’s a reason why growing seeds is classic science for kids. With a little effort, young children can learn about the different parts and the life cycle of a plant.

With the basic knowledge of how plants grow and what they need, our young learners of EY3 were ready to grow their own plants. But when we told them we are not using soil instead we will be using cotton to grow the seed, there was a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Some children said the plant will not grow, some felt we must try and a few others enquired whether we are going to do magic with a sparkle in their eyes.

The answer to all this was to do and see. We were all set in our I-genius lab to experiment.

Each child was given an empty plastic jar, a piece of cotton, 2 soaked bean seed, and some water to sprinkle. Children followed the instruction step by step.

First, they placed the cotton in the jar, wetted the cotton with water, placed the seed on the wet cotton, placed another piece of the cotton to cover the seed, and finally sprinkled water on top.

The plants were labeled and placed near the window. Each day the children checked their plants and wrote down the observation as their magic bean plant grew in the jar. The thrill and delight witnessed are beyond words.
