In an exciting and thought-provoking classroom activity, the IBYR1 students at CPS Global School, Anna Nagar, delved into the dynamic world of political cartoons, a medium that combines art and social commentary to provoke reflection and dialogue. The session was designed to hone their analytical and creative skills while fostering a deeper understanding of global issues.
The activity began with students analyzing a selected political cartoon in detail. They examined the visual and textual narratives, exploring how imagery, symbolism, and captions convey a powerful message. This exercise sharpened their critical thinking and helped them understand the subtleties of political satire and its role in influencing public opinion.
Building on this analysis, students were encouraged to step into the shoes of cartoonists. Each student drew a political cartoon, addressing a global issue that resonated with them. Topics ranged from climate change and social justice to inequality and international conflict. This creative exercise enabled them to express their perspectives artistically, demonstrating their ability to combine humor, irony, and poignant commentary in their work.
As an extended activity, the students will analyze the features of the political cartoons they created. They will present their insights to their peers, discussing their artistic choices and how these elements effectively communicate their intended message. This reflective exercise not only reinforces their understanding of visual and textual narratives but also enhances their presentation and public speaking skills.
Through this engaging activity, the IBYR1 students demonstrated their ability to think critically, create meaningfully, and communicate effectively. Such initiatives highlight CPSGS’s commitment to nurturing globally aware, creatively empowered, and intellectually curious learners.
