A great way of making small kids develop spatial and number sense is by teaching them how to measure! In EY 3 as a part of learning the concept of length, the children used everyday objects such as puzzle blocks popsicle sticks, pencils, and paperclips instead of measuring with standard units such as inches, feet, and centimeters. They also learnt the way to measure objects just by using their hand and legs with units like finger span, hand span, and foot span.
By exploring nonstandard measurement, students begin to grasp the concept of comparing and quantifying objects based on size. It provides them with a hands-on approach to understanding measurement, setting the stage for future exploration of standard measurement units.
