Understanding the properties of materials can be both fun and enlightening! Our CIE Grade 1 students recently dove into this topic with a series of exciting experiments that helped them explore the different characteristics of everyday materials.
First, they tested the waterproofness of the umbrella fabric by pouring water on it and observing how the fabric reacted. Some parts stayed dry, while others let water seep through! Next, they explored the absorption of cotton by soaking cotton balls in water, noticing how quickly they absorbed moisture. The students also compared rough and smooth surfaces by feeling different textures and discussing how they differ.
Finally, they tested the strength of various materials by stacking blocks, including cotton blocks, to see which could bear the most weight before collapsing. Through these activities, students practiced observing, comparing, and thinking critically. Each experiment revealed interesting insights about materials, helping them understand how everyday objects function in the world around them!
