As part of the International Award for Young People (IAYP) programme, students from IG1 and IB1 embarked on a four-day Adventure Journey to Kodaikanal from March 3rd to 7th. Designed to foster resilience, independence, and leadership, the trip immersed students in outdoor activities and survival skills training, guided by expert instructors from Indiahikes and supported by their teachers. The experience aimed to nurture a deeper bond with nature and peers, away from the distractions of modern technology.
From the Student’s Desk: Reflections of Poojita, IB DP1
After arriving at Madurai station, we travelled by van to the Spice Valley base camp in Kodaikanal. Upon arrival, we introduced ourselves to the instructors and learned how to pitch tents. That evening, we went on a waterfall trek, each of us carrying a rock as a test of strength and determination. Some of us camped in tents while others stayed in dorms. The next day began with a warm-up session, followed by lessons in navigation, map-making, and using the sun for direction. We played a game to test our navigation skills, which made learning fun. A first aid session taught us how to manage sprains, fractures, and wounds. In the evening, we learned to start a fire, which built our patience, communication, and teamwork.
On March 6th, we trekked to Avocado Hills, motivating each other along the way. Later, silver and gold level students prepared a group meal—dal, chapati, and vegetables. Our final day included a blindfolded nature walk and breathing exercises that deepened our sensory connection to the environment. Bronze-level students and a CAS student performed a skit to reflect on the journey, while silver and gold students conducted research on native flora and fauna. We returned to Chennai on the morning of March 8th, feeling empowered and inspired. The journey reminded us of our capabilities and strengthened our bond with nature and each other—without mobile phones, TV, or the internet, we truly disconnected to reconnect.
