Academic success is often seen as the ultimate goal for students, but personal growth extends far beyond grades. Developing practical skills, maintaining physical well-being, and contributing to the community are equally essential in shaping well-rounded individuals. The IAYP (International Award for Young People), organized by The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Foundation, aims to provide students with opportunities to grow in these areas.
At CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai, students are given the opportunity to undertake this internationally recognised programme alongside their academic journey. The Award is structured across three progressive levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—each increasing in challenge and commitment. While Bronze introduces participants to the foundations of the programme, Silver requires greater independence and sustained effort, and Gold represents the highest level, demanding long-term dedication, resilience, and leadership. In the academic year 2025–26, IBDP Year 2 and IGCSE Year 2 students successfully completed the programme, earning Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards. This required them to commit to four key sections: Voluntary Service, Skill Development, Physical Recreation, and an Adventurous Journey. Each component is designed to encourage consistency, discipline, and sustained personal growth. As part of the Voluntary Service component, the students engaged in community initiatives that promoted meaningful impact. One such initiative involved working with SANKALP – School for Autistic Children, where participants assisted in developing vocational and life skills among students through hands-on activities. The Skills and Physical Recreation sections allowed participants to pursue personal interests and improve their overall well-being. These activities varied according to individual interests, enabling students to build consistency and track their progress over time. A highlight of the programme was the Adventurous Journey, which challenged participants to step out of their comfort zones. This included preparation, practice, and a qualifying expedition. As part of this, the participants undertook a multi-day trek in Kodaikanal, where they applied navigation, teamwork, and survival skills in real-world settings. At the Gold level, participants are also required to complete a Residential Project, which involves spending a minimum of five days away from home while engaging in a shared activity with unfamiliar peers in a new environment. Overall, the IAYP is not defined by a single achievement but by the sustained commitment, discipline, and personal growth developed through consistent effort across all sections. CPS’s support for such programmes enables students to pursue challenges that extend learning beyond the classroom and into real-world experiences.
