Whole numbers are not enough! Let us be more precise!!
Understanding decimals is a crucial step toward mastering numerical concepts. Decimals provide a level of precision that whole numbers cannot match, making them indispensable in real-world applications such as measurements, finances, and data analysis. Grids serve as a powerful visual tool to help students grasp the concept of decimals effectively.
Students of grade 4 were very enthusiastic to form a decimal number and represent the number using grids. The grids were shaded to form a number differentiating the whole number part and decimal part and identifying relationships between tenths and hundredths. Grids enabled students to see decimals as fractions of a complete unit which enhances their overall mathematical reasoning skills. It was an engaging and enjoyable activity which helped students to think critically about decimal values and their relationships.
