Pipetting Precision: Mastering the art of accurate liquid handling

Written by cpsglobalblog

August 24th marks National Periodic Table Day, commemorating Dmitri Mendeleev’s 1869 publication of the periodic table, which revolutionized the field of chemistry. To celebrate the beginning of learning and understanding the fundamentals of chemistry, we initiated an activity-based lab series for CIE6 students of CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai. The students were enthusiastic and eager to learn. They were first introduced to lab safety and the general equipment used in the laboratory.

This week, special emphasis was placed on pipetting. Students were shown how the pipette, a special tool used to measure and transfer small amounts of liquid, is a crucial skill for scientists, researchers, and students working in various fields of chemistry, biology, and medicine. A demonstration was followed by hands-on practice where students handled pipettes and measured volumes. They were instructed on how to aspirate and dispense liquids, take accurate measurements, and check the meniscus for both colored and transparent liquids.

Common pipetting mistakes were also discussed, along with tips for successful pipetting, such as continuous practice and holding the pipette at the proper eye level. The theme set for the activity was “The right volume, every time!”
