Were you one of those kids who filled the margins of every notebook with scribbles and drawings? Who couldn’t leave a blank surface blank (including walls)?
Well, that’s doodling! The seemingly random scribbles we leave on notebooks, napkins, tabletops, and walls might carry some meaning. Doodling as an activity doesn’t really require you to think too much, just enough to put your brain into a little pause and relax. Children need these opportunities to unwind and work out their creative muscles.
To get children to regulate their emotions and stay focused, a doodling activity was planned and conducted to experience the benefits of doodling. Children simply enjoyed the doodling art that allowed them to make patterns without worrying about getting them “right.” Cute simple doodles were created by our kids that helped them to relax and take a break from their thoughts.
So perhaps the next time you need to have an important conversation with a child, do it while they’re doodling!
