Deciphering the Dance of Molecules – A Study on Heating Curves @ CPS Global School, Anna Nagar

Written by cpsglobalblog

Heating curves are graphical correlation between the heat added to a substance and the temperature. Heating curves constitute an integral part of the thermodynamic study of materials. They find major applications into heating control systems in domestic as well as industrial arenas.

As one of the key attributes of the IB learner profile is developing inquirers, the learners are extensively engaged in activities where they challenge assumptions and explore solutions to common problems during their academic pursuits.  During their Chemistry lesson, the inquirers of IB DP1 designed an investigation to study the heating curve of water from different sources and analyse the effects of impurities on the curve. This activity spurred the critical thinking and problem solving abilities of learners which form an integral part of the IB curriculum. Furthermore taking a step towards international mindedness the learners also explored the effects of water pollution on the effectiveness of water coolant systems in the industries.
