“Tactics is knowing what to do when there is something to do; strategy is knowing what to do when there is nothing to do.”

The sixty-four squares that get arranged in eight vertical files and eight horizontal ranks allowing the thirty-two coins to make innumerable moves on a chequered board is what makes the game of chess interesting. With the 44th chess Olympiad being hosted in Chennai, the CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai celebrated the frenzy of the game by not just offering a plethora of chances to know more about this game to the learners but also went the extra mile of erecting a mammoth sized chess board that can comfortably place learners who were dressed as thirty-two chess coins and also did the moves over the chess board.
What better day other than the International Chess day that is observed on the 20th of July, 2022 to explain the game of chess to the learners. The ELP learners of CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai were attired in black and white to mark this special day. Our ELP toddlers mastered the moves of the pieces by training with the chess board alongside strolling over the huge chess board that was readied to commemorate the day. The learners assembled over the board representing the various chess pieces and counted the rows and columns of the board to only understand that 32 black and 32 white squares of any size that is visible for the human eye are all that requires creating the board of chess. While the ELP 1 learners involved them in recreating the smaller version of the board in the class, the ELP 2 and ELP 3 learnt the names alongside the limitations in the number and direction of moves of each piece. The learners actively participated and made the day more memorable by knowing more about this game by standing akin to the famous verse by the French Mathematician, Blaise Pascal that states, “Chess is the gymnasium of the mind.
The students of CAIE 6 to IBDP Year 2 embraced an impressive affair of confrontation between the sides led by a commander for each side who gave the orders and the gallantry efforts of the King, queen, bishops, knights, rooks and pawns were made more interesting by making it an inter-house competition. The four houses of the school namely, Alphard led by Rohail of CAIE 8; Canopus led by Raahil of IBDP 2; Diadem led by Harish of IGCSE 2 and Plasma led by Ashwin of IBDP 2 battled it out with each other alongside loud cheers and motivation phrases from the audience. The four teams locked horns on the 26th of July with the teams, Canopus and Diadem emerged as qualifiers and the final match to decide the winner was held on the culmination event held on the 4th of August, 2022. The nail-biting moves of the final moments of the game was received with applause from the audience who were cheering form their respective classrooms as the match was brought to the classroom live and exclusive through zoom platform. The team Diadem was declared the winner leaving the members of the house to cheer for their commander whose tactful moves and strategic planning led them to the path of victory. Overall, the fun and frolic of competing against their peers with thoughtful moves accompanied by wise planning followed by calculated insightfulness to envisage the results of the game paving way for the teams to give their best till the moment they came to terms with the results reverberated with the famous quote by Shikha Mishra that states: Participating is sometime more important than Winning, it makes you a better winner for the next time.
