Celebrating National Mathematics Day at CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai

Mathematics is a playground where one can explore and experiment without the fear of breaking anything.

– Srinivasa Ramanujan

On December 22nd, in commemoration of the birth anniversary of the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, National Mathematics Day was celebrated with great fervour at CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai. The week-long festivities showcased the inexplicable indispensability of mathematics in our regular routine and highlighted the creativity and passion of the students and teachers.

Since the dawn of civilization, from the invention of the wheel to the measurement of time, early humans not only utilized mathematics to evolve in sophistication but also embraced its ubiquity, considering it the bedrock for unravelling the nature around them. As an integral element of National Math Day celebrations, students and teachers actively engaged in daily puzzles posted by the department, and it would be an understatement to mention that the students enthusiastically participated in answering questions and eagerly awaited the solutions the next day, as they demonstrated an unparalleled passion for deciphering the mysteries of mathematics. It was a pure delight to witness teachers, each with expertise in varied areas often quite distant from the realm of mathematics, join the bandwagon. They displayed both vigour and rigour, actively participating in the activities.

Apart from mathematics being an intricate part of higher education regardless of the discipline, the adeptness with which a student demonstrates the ability to handle mathematical concepts is one of the key criteria for future opportunities. Mathophobia, acting as a roadblock to achieving formidable expertise, is far from being condoned; rather, the very thought of such a phobia should be condemned.

A fancy parade of CAIE 1 and CAIE 2 students brought the moment to life, with their attires reflecting both the shapes and personalities of the field. It was nothing short of an eye-catching ode to the greats who not only walked the extra mile but measured it

The celebration included a fancy dress competition, where CAIE 1 and 2 students dressed up as shapes and mathematicians, delivering a fabulous performance. CAIE 3 students engaged in a tangram activity, demonstrating their artistic skills through the reconstruction of displayed images. CAIE 4 students expressed their creativity by producing intricate tessellations that captivated everyone. CAIE 5 students explored the enchanting world of spiral arts, skilfully crafting intricate patterns within designated grids.

The vibrant Lower Secondary students immersed themselves in a plethora of math games, from connection challenges to lively recitations and rapid-fire rounds. Meanwhile, the IGCSE and IBDP students elevated the mathematical celebration, showcasing their understanding through compelling posters and presentations that explored the application of math in everyday life and its intersection with technology.

As the National Mathematics Day festivities reached their culmination, students came together to share the inspiring life story of Srinivasa Ramanujan and his profound contributions to mathematics. The stage resonated with the melodious voices of IGCSE Year 1 students, seamlessly blending mathematical terms into their captivating performance.

In essence, this week-long celebration not only divulged the inherent beauty of mathematics but also emphasized its practical applications, bringing joy to both students and teachers. The collective efforts of the school community transformed National Mathematics Day at CPS Global School into an unforgettable and enriching experience.
