The Little Theatre’s 12th edition of the International Theatre Festival, The Little Festival for young audiences returned to Chennai, captivating students from CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai. This annual festival aims to provide children with an escape from the pressures of academics through high-quality theatre experiences. On the 4th of July, students of CAIE 1 to CAIE 6 gathered at the Anna Centenary Library Auditorium, eagerly awaiting the commencement of a theatrical masterpiece entitled, “The Kooks SUNNY SIDE-UP.” The stage came alive with a group of quirky, eccentric cooks in a strange kitchen filled with the oddest ingredients. Little did they know that these seemingly ordinary cooks held the fate of the world in their frying pans! The theme of the show revolved around the urgent mission to create an extraordinary recipe capable of saving the world from impending doom. The cooks embarked on a thrilling adventure, venturing into magical worlds and alternative dimensions to find the otherworldly ingredients needed for the recipe. With each moment passing, the pressure mounted as they raced against time to fulfil their mission. On the 5th of July, students of CAIE 7 to IGCSE Year 1 and IBDP Year 1 witnessed a show by a South Korean troupe that seamlessly blended objects, videos, mime, and puppetry. The show, “His day” revolved around the monotonous and exhausting life of a weary salaryman, seeking solace in the memories of his joyous childhood. In a world consumed by the boss’s relentless pursuit of results, the protagonist felt the weight of societal pressures, akin to a circus acrobat being whipped. Through the brilliant performances of both actors and puppets, the audience witnessed the unfolding of a poetic and visually stunning spectacle. The synergy between objects, videos, mimes, and puppetry created a harmonious tapestry, accompanied by soothing music. The artists skilfully conveyed the poignant message that mundane routines can take a toll on one’s well-being, reducing individuals to mere caricatures, only finding true happiness within the confines of their dreams.

While the students laughed uproariously at the hilarious antics and witty demeanour of the artists, there was a deeper underpinning message woven into the storyline. The frying pan symbolized the world, heating up due to global warming and the pressing need for it to cool down. The varied ingredients represented the diverse challenges faced by different nations and communities. The cooks, representing citizens from around the world, were forced to come together and find a solution using the available ingredients, symbolizing the need for global unity and cooperation. Through the brilliant performances of both actors and puppets, the students witnessed the unfolding of a poetic and visually stunning spectacle. The students were completely captivated by the stellar performances and engaging storytelling of the artists.

The festival proved to be a memorable experience for the students. Through the uproarious laughter and thrilling moments, they not only had a blast but also gained a deeper understanding of the world around them. The combination of entertainment and a meaningful message sparked their imagination, instilled a sense of responsibility towards the environment, and highlighted the importance of working together to create a better world. It was a day filled with laughter, inspiration, and the realization that even in the face of adversity, a recipe for positive change is within our reach.
