One essential element stands out when laying the foundation for reading success: Sight Words. They are common words that kids recognize instantly without sounding them out. Recognizing words by sight helps kids become faster, more fluent readers. Many sight words are tricky to read and spell — they aren’t spelled the way they sound.
We played a game of passing the plate to help children learn sight words in a fun way. The kids were made to sit in a circle and give one plate each. Music was played and when the music stopped, the kids had to read aloud the words on their plate. Effectively teaching these seemingly small words can set your little ones on the path to becoming confident readers, and foster a love for reading that will last a lifetime.
