Our IBDP students delved into the number world to understand the international mindedness involved in the numbers. They had a great time finding out where numbers came from. They looked at how the signs we use in math changed over time. The students really liked learning this and now want to know even more!
They found out that people in different parts of the world, a long, long time ago, all needed ways to count things. People in places like ancient Egypt and faraway lands all came up with their own ways to show numbers. This shows us that everyone, no matter where they live, needs to understand amounts.
The students also saw that the math signs we use today didn’t just appear. They changed slowly as people in different countries shared ideas. This means that many people from different places helped make math the way we know it.
When they learned about Pythagoras and those tricky numbers that can’t be written as simple fractions, they saw that even old math ideas can still be interesting. It showed them that people everywhere have thought hard about numbers, and these ideas are still important for us today.
The students were happy to learn how math connects people from all over the world and from different times. They understood that learning math is also like learning about the history of how people everywhere have thought and shared their ideas. This made them feel connected to people across the globe through the shared language of numbers, and they are excited to keep learning more about it.
