Exploring the Science Behind Traditional Beliefs: Insights from Ms. Jamuna Ramajeyam’s Guest Lecture @ CPS Global School Thirumazhisai

Written by cpsglobalblog

In a thought-provoking guest lecture organized for IGCSE Year 2 and IBYR 1 students of CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai, Ms. Jamuna Ramajeyam, a distinguished scholar, delved into the scientific foundations underlying traditional beliefs. The lecture aimed to assist students with their Global Perspectives group projects by shedding light on the scientific reasoning behind age-old customs. By unraveling the mysteries behind these traditional beliefs, Ms. Ramajeyam empowered students to approach their research with a fresh perspective and a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity.

Ms. Ramajeyam began her lecture by emphasizing the interconnectedness of science and tradition. Traditional beliefs, she explained, often emerged from generations of observations and experiences, which were then passed down through cultural practices and storytelling.

Throughout the lecture, Ms. Ramajeyam explored numerous traditional beliefs and illuminated their scientific importance. For example, she discussed the custom of having an oil bath and the health benefits associated with the use of several types of oils. Next, she elaborated on the ringing of bells in the churches and temples. From a scientific perspective, bells produce sound through the vibration of their metal bodies, and the resulting sound waves propagate through the surrounding air. The sound helps to focus the mind and concentrate.

The lecture touched upon the benefits of sitting on the floor while having food. This can help strengthen the back muscles, promote better alignment of the spine, and improve overall posture. The fingers and palms contain acupressure points that are associated with various organs. The act of pressing the palms together in Namaste may stimulate these points and potentially have subtle energetic effects on the body. Ms Ramajeyam also discussed the benefits of applying Mehendi, the significance of waking up at “Brahmamurtha”. Ms Ramajeyam explained how making kolams requires precise hand movements and fine motor skills. It involves fingers to carefully and skillfully create the intricate patterns. This process helps develop hand-eye coordination, dexterity, and control over movements.

By gaining a deeper understanding of the scientific reasons behind traditional beliefs, students were equipped to approach their research with a multidisciplinary mindset. They recognized the importance of respecting and valuing traditional beliefs, even when they may appear unfamiliar or contradictory to scientific principles. Armed with this knowledge, they gained a fresh perspective on cultural diversity and appreciation for the wisdom embedded within traditional beliefs.
