“The best way to understand geography is to experience it firsthand.”
The CIE 6 students of CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai participated in an engaging field based learning activity on 7th July 2026 to explore the concept of microclimates and understand the factors that influence them. A microclimate is a small, localized area where climatic conditions such as temperature, humidity, wind, and sunlight differ from those of the surrounding environment.
The objective of the activity was to help students observe how natural and human-made features create variations in local weather conditions. Students explored different locations across the school campus, including indoor classrooms, corridor windows, shaded outdoor spaces, areas beneath trees, concrete surfaces, grassy patches, and sandy areas. At each location, they carefully observed and recorded differences in temperature, wind movement, sunlight, and shade.
Through this hands-on investigation, students discovered how trees, buildings, surface materials, and the direction of the Sun influence local climatic conditions. They compared their observations across different locations and discussed the reasons behind these variations, connecting their findings with geographical concepts studied in class.
The activity encouraged inquiry-based learning by allowing students to experience geography beyond the classroom. It strengthened their observation, recording, analytical, and critical thinking skills while helping them appreciate the relationship between the physical environment and climate. By investigating real-world examples of microclimates within their own school campus, students gained a deeper understanding of how geographical factors shape the environment around them.
