Our CIE 1 students recently delved into a captivating science experiment to find out: “Do all rocks absorb water?” With excitement, they began their investigation with a variety of rocks and cups of water.
Each child was given different types of rocks to test. The students predicted whether each rock would absorb water or not. They carefully dripped water on each rock and observed what happened.
The results were surprising and educational. Some rocks absorb water, while others do not. The students discovered that different rocks have different properties. For example, porous rocks, like pumice, absorb water because they have tiny holes that allow water to seep in. In contrast, smooth, dense rocks, like granite, did not absorb water as they were less porous.
This hands-on investigation taught the students about the diversity in rock properties. It was a fun and engaging way for the students to understand that science is full of surprises and that each material has unique characteristics!
