Have you ever thought about what makes some animals so different from others? Some have strong backbones, while others don’t, creating two fascinating groups within the animal kingdom!
Our Grade 1 students were introduced to the exciting concept of humans being part of the animal kingdom. As they explored this topic, they learned to classify animals into vertebrates (animals with backbones) and invertebrates (animals without backbones). Through interactive activities, they made some wonderful discoveries.
Students examined a human skeleton model and observed how the backbone supports and helps with movement. They then studied a fish specimen to see how a spine helps vertebrates move through water. This hands-on exploration gave them a clear understanding of why backbones are so vital.
The students explored specimens of a prawn and a bee, observing how these animals survive without a backbone. They discovered that invertebrates often rely on hard outer shells or soft, flexible bodies for protection and movement.
By comparing the human skeleton with these specimens, the students identified the key differences between vertebrates and invertebrates. This interactive journey into the animal kingdom not only helped the students understand the diversity of life but also highlighted how humans connect to other animals. By studying real specimens, they gained a deeper appreciation for the natural world and their place in it.
