Building Square Numbers, One Triangle at a Time!

Written by cpsglobalblog

Our Grade 4 mathematicians recently explored square numbers through a hands-on, collaborative activity that brought maths to life. Each student transformed an A4 sheet of paper into a triangle. Working in groups of four, they combined their triangles to create a larger triangle. As more rows were added, students observed a growing pattern and discovered how the total number of small triangles formed square numbers. Along the way, they also explored number sequences, the term-to-term rule, and the connection between square numbers and odd numbers.

The activity concluded with the whole class working together to build a colourful triangle using 16 small triangles, creating a memorable visual representation of the pattern. Beyond mathematics, the activity developed valuable teamwork skills. Students listened to one another, tested different ideas, learned from mistakes, and worked cooperatively to achieve a shared goal. It was wonderful to see mathematical thinking, communication, and collaboration come together in such an engaging lesson.
