Our CIE 1 English lesson was filled with excitement as we explored synonyms—words that have the same or similar meanings—through a fun and interactive activity.
A bowl filled with colourful chits sat at the centre of the classroom. Each chit had a simple word written on it, such as look, chat, view, and discuss. One by one, the children eagerly picked a chit, read the word aloud, and thoughtfully joined the group carefully, ensuring they all meant the same thing.
Soon, the classroom echoed with responses:
Look became see and watch
Chat turned into talk and speak
View means to see or look at
Discuss changed into talk about and share ideas
Some children explained their answers using sentences, while others used actions and expressions to show their understanding. This playful approach helped the students realise that different words can be used to express the same idea.
Through this hands-on activity, learners not only built their vocabulary but also gained confidence in speaking and thinking independently. Learning synonyms became more than a lesson—it became a joyful experience of sharing, listening, and discovering new words together.
