Why say “went”, when you can “whirl, zoom or stomp”? Grade 3 finds the power of verbs @ CPS Global School, Anna Nagar

Written by cpsglobalblog

Earlier this week, our Grade 3 students participated in a lively English activity that focused on strengthening their vocabulary—one verb at a time. The aim was simple yet impactful: help students understand how replacing weak verbs with strong, expressive ones can bring clarity and energy to their writing.

To make the activity more interactive, a “Powerful Verb Wall” was set up in the classroom. It featured a range of action-packed verbs such as sprinted, whispered, slammed, and gobbled. Students were given short sentences containing common, weak verbs like went, said, or ate, and were encouraged to replace them using verbs from the wall.

As they read their revised sentences aloud, the difference was immediately noticeable. A sentence like “He went to the shop” became “He dashed to the shop.” With each change, students realized how a strong verb could create a more vivid and specific image in the reader’s mind.

Activities like these are small steps toward building a richer vocabulary and stronger writing skills—skills that will continue to grow with every word they choose.
