“The Stick That Tells Time: A Shadow’s Journey” @ CPS Global School, Anna Nagar

Written by cpsglobalblog

“Shadows are the Earth’s way of showing us time in motion.”

CIE 3 students entered the sunshine to explore how Earth’s rotation affects shadows. Using a stick, paper, and some careful observations, they discovered how shadows change length and direction throughout the day.

The stick stood tall in full sunlight, casting a shadow onto the paper. Every hour, students marked the end of the shadow and noted the time. By the end of the day, they connected their marks to form shadow lines, revealing how the Sun’s position in the sky changed over time.

The experiment showed how Earth’s rotation moves the Sun across the sky, creating day and night and making shadows dance. Measuring the shadow lengths added a fun mathematical twist, helping students connect science with everyday observations.

This activity transformed a simple stick into a tool of discovery, making science fun and hands-on while unlocking the secrets of Earth’s rotation!
