The Magic of Colour-Changing Liquids! @ CPS Global School, Anna Nagar

Written by cpsglobalblog

Our curious little scientists had an exciting time exploring a fascinating experiment this week — Colour Changing Liquid! Using simple ingredients like turmeric powder, detergent, and vinegar, they witnessed how colours can change right before their eyes!

We began by mixing turmeric powder with water to make a bright yellow solution. The children admired its sunny colour and shared what it reminded them of — sunflowers, gold, and even mangoes!

Next, the children added a few drops of detergent, and to everyone’s amazement, the yellow liquid turned reddish-orange! The classroom was filled with gasps of surprise as they watched the transformation.

Then came the final twist — we added a few drops of vinegar. Like a magic trick, the red colour slowly faded back to yellow! The children were delighted to see the liquid “change its mind” and return to its original shade.

Through this hands-on activity, our young learners discovered that turmeric acts as a natural indicator. It turns red when mixed with a base (like detergent) and changes back to yellow when an acid (like vinegar) is added.

This simple experiment helped children understand that science is full of wonders waiting to be explored — sometimes even in our kitchen! It encouraged them to observe, predict, and ask questions, all while having a colourful time learning!
