Soap Knapping: A Hands-On Journey to the Stone Age

Written by cpsglobalblog

This week, Grade 5 students took part in an engaging and creative soap knapping activity to explore Stone Age tool-making. Using bars of soap and simple tools like butter knives, scales, and spoons, students learned how early humans shaped stones into useful tools.

This activity allowed them to experience the challenge of shaping materials without modern technology. They gained insight into how early humans had to be both inventive and practical, carefully choosing shapes that suited different purposes such as scraping, cutting, or hunting.

Students showed incredible creativity, producing everything from spearheads to hand axes. They even repurposed the shavings into microlithic tools like arrowheads, needles, and hooks. By justifying the purpose of their tools, students made meaningful connections between design and the everyday challenges faced by Stone Age people.

Overall, the class had fun and deepened their understanding of the life of early humans.
