Revisiting the Joy of Traditional Village Games from Tamil Nadu @ CPS Global School, Anna Nagar

Written by cpsglobalblog

Today, our grade 3 students took a delightful step back in time as they explored the traditional village games once played with great joy across Tamil Nadu. These age-old games, enjoyed by both children and adults, brought smiles, teamwork, and clever thinking—without a single battery or plug!

Oru Kudam Thanni Eduthu
This engaging activity had children mimicking the act of carefully carrying a pot of water, just as people did from the village well. It was a wonderful exercise in balance, coordination, and patience.

Orey Poo Pothicham
A game that celebrates friendship and sharing, where children play in a circle, pretending to offer flowers to each other while singing together. Simple, sweet, and full of joy!

Pallanguzhi
A traditional board game using shells or stones, this game challenges players to drop and count items in small pits. It’s an excellent tool for building numeracy and strategy skills.

Thaayam (Dice Game)
Played with cowrie shells or dice on a cloth board, this game is full of surprise moves and strategy, as players race their tokens to the finish.

Kallattam
A hopping game where stones are tossed and children jump through drawn squares. It improves focus, balance, and agility.

These games were more than entertainment—they nurtured friendship, memory, focus, and critical thinking. Reintroducing them in today’s world helps children appreciate our cultural heritage while having timeless fun.

Let’s bring these joyful traditions back to life—one game at a time!
