Place Value Puzzle Mat – Learning with Hands and Hearts @ CPS Global School, Anna Nagar

Written by cpsglobalblog

This week, our CIE 1 learners became number detectives as they explored the concept of place value through a fun group activity called the Place Value Puzzle Mat.

Using number cards and base-ten flashcards, the children worked in teams to build, compare, and order two-digit numbers. The classroom was filled with excitement as learners matched numbers to base-ten blocks, identified tens and ones, and discussed which numbers were bigger or smaller.

One group proudly shared, “63 is more than 29 because it has more tens!” — showing just how well they understood the idea.

Each team used mats to show their numbers — with base-ten blocks on one side and digits on the other. This helped learners understand that a number’s value depends on where the digit is placed.

The activity encouraged teamwork, clear thinking, and lots of joyful learning. With hands-on materials and group discussion, learners discovered that place value is not just about numbers — it’s about understanding how numbers work.

When learning is this fun and meaningful, math becomes exciting and real!
