Learning Ordinal Numbers Through Fun – “Balancing Ball Race” Activity @ CPS Global School, Anna Nagar

Written by cpsglobalblog

Children learn best when concepts are linked with play and movement. To introduce the concept of ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th), our kindergarteners participated in a lively “Balancing Ball Race”. The activity combined fun, coordination, and learning — making math come alive through physical experience.

The children were divided into small groups. Each child held a ball on their left palm and moved forward carefully to reach the finish line without dropping it. The challenge encouraged focus and balance.

Meanwhile, the other children stood on the sides, cheering and observing the racers closely. As each child reached the finish line, the children’s called out she is 1st!, he is 2nd!, she is 3rd!…”

Through this joyful race, children naturally began to understand position and order, which are key ideas behind ordinal numbers.

Learning Highlights:

  • Children experienced ordinal numbers through real-life sequencing.
  • They developed gross motor skills, hand–eye coordination, and team spirit.
  • Observation and verbal participation helped strengthen their math vocabulary.
