Friction is an engaging and enjoyable concept for young learners to explore. Our EY3 students learned what friction is and how it works on different surfaces through experiential, hands-on activities. They observed how friction changes by rolling various objects across different surfaces.
They also discovered that when rice is packed tightly around a pencil inside a bottle, the increased friction helps the pencil stay firmly in place. In another activity, they explored how interleaving the pages of two books increases the contact area, making it very difficult to pull the books apart.
Through these experiments, learners understood that greater surface contact results in increased friction. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about friction through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
