Our recent educational visit to M.G.R. University of Fisheries and Research was nothing short of a deep dive into the fascinating world of aquatic science. Students of IGCSE Yr-1 & 2 had the opportunity to step beyond our textbooks and explore real-life marine ecosystems, research projects, and sustainable aquaculture practices.
They began with an engaging introduction to the institution’s history, mission, and its pioneering role in advancing fisheries science and marine research in India. One of the highlights of the visit was exploring the marine systems and rearing tanks. Students observed various aquatic species—from ornamental fish to commercially important ones—being reared in controlled environments.
The university’s pond systems demonstrated how different types of fish are cultivated using sustainable methods. Guides explained how water quality, temperature, and nutrition are carefully managed to ensure the health and growth of aquatic life.
A visit to the university’s marine museum was another memorable experience. The museum housed an extensive collection of marine specimens, including rare species, shells, and preserved aquatic organisms. Informative displays and models helped us better understand the anatomy, life cycles, and ecological roles of marine species. This visit stressed the importance of conserving our aquatic resources and inspired our students to explore careers in environmental and marine sciences.
