Imagine trying to recreate a picture from just a few words—this is exactly what our students of IBDP year 1 did in the computer science class, acting as a live demonstration of data compression. One described the image, another compressed it, and the third reconstructed it, showing first-hand how information can be lost or preserved. This simple exercise vividly showed how compression reduces data and how details can be lost in the process. Students quickly grasped the difference between essential and redundant information and understood the trade-offs behind lossy and lossless compression. It was a fun, hands-on way to see theory come alive and reinforced the importance of prioritizing information in computing.
