Grade 2 children had an exciting hands-on activity where they used colourful ice cream sticks to explore multiplication and division fact families. Learners grouped the sticks equally to form multiplication facts — for example, placing 2 sticks in each group and making 3 groups to show 2 × 3 = 6. They then discovered the related division facts, such as 6 ÷ 2 = 3 and 6 ÷ 3 = 2, by rearranging the same set of sticks.
This activity helped them see how multiplication and division are connected, making abstract concepts concrete and easy to understand. The vibrant ice cream sticks added a playful element that kept children engaged while deepening their understanding of repeated addition, equal grouping, and sharing.
Working in small groups encouraged collaboration and peer learning, as children discussed, compared, and explained their groupings to one another. It was a joyful, hands-on way to build strong foundations in multiplication and division while also developing teamwork and communication skills!
