Discovering Family Traits: A Fun Inheritance Activity @ CPS Global School, Anna Nagar

Written by cpsglobalblog

Learning becomes truly meaningful when children can connect it to their own lives – and that’s exactly what happened during our recent Inheritance Activity in CIE 1.

As part of our science learning, children were asked to bring their childhood photographs along with pictures of their parents. With great excitement and curiosity, they carefully observed the photos and compared features such as eye shape, smile, hair texture, dimples, facial expressions, and even posture. This simple yet powerful activity helped students understand the concept of inheritance – how certain traits are passed from parents to children.

After observation, learners recorded their findings in their classwork. They wrote sentences like “I have my mother’s smile,” “My hair is curly like my father’s,” and “My eyes look similar to my parents.” Through this, children practiced not only scientific thinking but also descriptive writing and observation skills.

The classroom buzzed with joy as students shared their discoveries with friends, proudly pointing out similarities and laughing at surprising differences. This activity encouraged self-awareness, strengthened family connections, and built respect for individual uniqueness.

Most importantly, students learned that while we may inherit certain physical traits from our parents, each child is special and unique in their own way. The activity beautifully blended science with emotions, making learning engaging, personal, and memorable.

A wonderful step towards experiential learning – where science truly comes alive!
