Dracula’s Secret Recipe: A Spooky Science Experiment

Written by cpsglobalblog

CIE7 students of CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai celebrated Halloween in the biology lab with a thrilling experiment titled “Dracula’s Secret Recipe”, linking their Blood chapter to real-life chemistry and research skills. Dressed in their vibrant Halloween costumes, the young scientists transformed the lab into a spooky science den as they experimented with ferric chloride and potassium thiocyanate to create a striking blood-red solution that resembled real blood. They learned how iron ions react with thiocyanate ions to form the red complex [FeSCN]²⁺ and observed how changes in concentration affected the intensity of the colour, connecting this chemical reaction to the role of iron in haemoglobin. Emphasising safety and scientific thinking, students wore goggles and gloves, practiced accurate measuring, and disposed of chemicals responsibly while also exploring safer, food-based alternatives for display purposes. The activity encouraged curiosity, observation, and critical reasoning—core aspects of the Thinking and Research strand—while making science come alive through a creative Halloween theme. It was a memorable session where curiosity met chemistry, and science turned delightfully spooky!
