On 28th July 2025, students of IGCSE 1 & 2 visited the Central Institute of Brackish Water Aquaculture (CIBA) in Chennai. The trip offered hands-on learning about marine biology, sustainable fish farming, and aquaculture technologies, complementing their curriculum with real-world exposure.
CIBA, under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), focuses on sustainable brackish water aquaculture to boost fishery productivity, protect ecosystems, and support livelihoods.
Highlights of the Visit
- Differentiated freshwater, marine, and brackish water ecosystems
- Learned about genetic improvement, disease management, and water quality in aquaculture
- Observed live fish tanks, hatcheries, and aquatic species cultivation
- Dissected Rohu fish (Labeo rohita) to identify internal organs
- Understood how aquaculture supports food systems and the environment
Interactive Sessions
Students engaged with scientists on:
- Climate change and marine ecosystems
- Career paths in aquaculture and marine biology
- India’s role in global seafood production
Hatchery & Nursery Visit:
- Students toured facilities for tiger shrimp, Asian seabass, mud crab, and milkfish, witnessing breeding and larval development processes.
Focus on Sustainability
Researchers highlighted eco-friendly practices like:
- Biosecurity protocols
- Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA)
- Low-input, high-output systems
This field trip fostered scientific curiosity, environmental awareness, and a deeper understanding of sustainable aquaculture.
