LEADERSHIP TRAINING

CPS Global School culture is built on a foundation that encourages leadership in many different forms, at every level within our School. Building resilience and self-confidence in a student cannot be achieved in a day as it is a process; but every effort is taken to eventually groom them to be a global leader. We provide a clear pathway for every student to develop leadership competencies at the right time as we earnestly believe that a child centric approach will frame a responsible citizen.

Primary

At Primary Level, CPS Global School focuses on student participation in a wide range of activities and initiatives so as to develop a greater awareness of the needs of others. Class Monitors and Asst. Monitors are deputed to instill leadership qualities when young. During the council elections, the young campaigners of the Upper Primary voice out, confidently advocating their worth with all creativity and campaigning strategies to validate their position in the council. Every year, new opportunities are given to make all possible ways for the student leaders to adorn various positions of the Jr. Student Council. Having vested with the power the facilitators hand hold the young leaders and help them walk the journey with confidence. The Junior House Captains encourage their peers to work in a team to bring glory to their houses.

Taking forward the skills imbibed in the primary, students at this stage are encouraged to participate in MUNs, World Scholar’s Cup, both inter and intra school.

MUN for India is a series of high-quality Model UN conferences held with the focus to encourage young minds to understand the global issues they face today and their potential to become changemakers of the future. It is an annual feature, the school hosts/co-hosts MUN for India for Lower Secondary Students with a pre conference training to understand the most critical aspect of leadership opportunities in the fast changing environments. These conferences challenge students to think critically about global issues, sustainable development goals and inspire them to take action for positive change within their communities. Grade 8 upwards, students are guided to prepare and present position papers, understand UN procedures to increase their knowledge on the functioning of the complex world around them.

The World Scholar’s Cup Is a prestigious international team academic tournament and enrichment program that is conducted around the world with a goal to inspire young students to discover new strengths and new skills. Each year, a large number of teams (Juniors & Seniors) from CPS Global prepare to debate a current global theme, explore subjects that range from Science to Literature to Social Studies and be a part of the main four events – Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge, and Scholar’s Bowl.

Student Council: We provide many opportunities for students to explore and develop their own leadership styles, learning the ability to lead in a way which inspires, builds trust and brings people together. Students of Upper Secondary are empowered to lead with formal positions of responsibility, with an emphasis on leading by example. We champion freedom of thought and encourage students to have the confidence to voice their views, and the wisdom to form them from a place of thoughtfulness and balance. We create all possible ways for the students to become leaders to adorn the positions of the Student Council. Our Head Boy and Head Girl lead their fellow students through various activities and become the torch bearers for the student community.

WIMUN
Young leaders of CPS Global are given the privilege to learn, promote citizenship by participating in US Govt./United Nation simulations, symposiums, pre conference workshops in and outside the country. WFUNA International Model UN (WIMUN) is one of the world’s choicest academic simulations of the United Nations, wherein students emulate the role of international diplomats, while aiming to develop mutually agreeable solutions to global challenges, through debate and deliberation, using the protocols of the UN itself. Every year our student delegates are provided with a golden opportunity to undergo global leadership training by WFUNA. The opening and plenary sessions of this conference are held in the UN, New York/Geneva where selected number of delegates were titled with the “Diplomacy Award” based on their leadership qualities, communication skill sets, body language, gestures, social activities and above all true confidence to pass resolutions and arrive at a consensus.

ILMUNC
Ivy League Model United Nations Conference is yet another expedition towards the goal of global leadership for our students of Upper Secondary. They are exposed to make significant contributions to the Model UN ecosystem in India through its emphasis on high-quality debate, holistic learning experiences and impact avenues that extend beyond committee sessions.

HMCA
Harvard Model Congress Asia, the U.S. government simulation conference is yet another event that spruces our students to know about government and international relations, navigate into the pressing global issues and offer a forum to discuss possible solutions. Students from around the world assume the roles of American and international leaders to address significant global issues while learning how the US government and various international organizations operate. Our students participate in debates, deliver speeches, and converge to write bills with the aim of passing resolutions and legislation to solve these issues.

WORLD SCHOLAR’S CUP
Each year, a large number of Seniors teams from CPS Global partake in World Scholar’s Cup to debate a current global theme, explore subjects that range from Science to Literature to Social Studies and be a part of the main four events – Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge, and Scholar’s Bowl. Many of our qualifying teams earn invitations at every Global Round to attend the Tournament of Champions finale at Yale University to face the best hundred teams around the world. They truly prove their mettle, amazing the medal tally to more than 200 accompanied by an array of trophies.

FUTURESAKE
FutureSake, an youth-centred program around Sustainable Habitats envisions to co-create knowledge societies to construct, share and use knowledge for the prosperity and well-being of the people and the environment. As an associate partner with worldview, we do this by engaging students through research and audits, discussion & deliberation, travel, case studies and hands-on projects that equip them with the mindset required for a smarter future. The CPS Changemakers visit Singapore and study this exceptional city that uses the best of the available resources for a clean and healthy environment. Thereby, the baton is carried forward to spread the awareness for a sustainable future for the coming generation; implement the best practices in their own school campus and at home.

ERUDITE AND GLEANINGS: Students of Grade 9 and upwards are a part of Leadership Talk Series. They are curated to motivate our students to uncover their true potential and face challenges with indomitable spirit. Each session of the Erudite Talk is carefully designed to integrally align various aspects of learning with the curriculum context. SPORTS & WELLNESS

Sports are a way to stay healthy and fit, both physically and emotionally as they help students prepare to face the challenges of life. Sports equip them with various skills like persistence, perseverance, collaboration, accountability, self-confidence which are not directly connected with physical endurance. Physical Literacy Program (PLP) at CPS Global is innovative with a unique approach to fitness – combining strength, yoga and sporting skills. This program educates students for lifelong wellbeing and incorporates various activities with the purpose to develop sports finesse. It’s all about dynamic learning with a focus on rhythmic literacy and multiple intelligences.

The school observes National Sports Day, International Yoga Day to emphasize on the importance of sports and wellbeing. On these days students fondly recall and play traditional sports and games bringing the culture alive.

Primary

Kids possess bundles of endless energy and Physical Education is an excellent outlet for releasing some of that. During the weekly schedules, they are encouraged to play and stay active as we provide child-friendly play facilities to help them enjoy their sports.

Lower primary aims at gross motor skills which help in development of children’s growth. CPS Global endeavors the following activities to achieve the same :

  • Obstacle courses using cones and hurdles to improve navigational skills
  • Fun filled exercise like hopping, jumping, pulling and pushing, ride-on toy to build on dynamic balance
  • Controlled actions such as walking on a low beam, swinging, sliding, climbing to work with gravity and equilibrium

In the upper primary, we focus on cardio-based physical and muscle training activities to prepare them with the specific skills required to play a game. This segment focuses on the following activities:

  • Aerobic Activities: running, playing futsal, mini basketball
  • Muscle-strengthening activities: tug of war, hurdles, athletics, hula hoops, rock climbings
  • Bone-building activities: basketball, tennis, running, kho-kho

The Sports Day is a glorious annual event in the annals of CPS Global School. We proudly celebrate the achievement of each and every student and their sportsmanship. The school recognises the highest level achievers of the year with Abhinav Bindra and Dhyan Chand Awards. It’s one big happy event where the whole school including the parent community comes together to encourage and support the blossoming talent of our young achievers. This day also witnesses parents participating in exciting events specially knitted for them. The day ends with the proud house champions of the year walking away with their Rolling Trophies amidst loud cheer and appreciation from their house members.

To build a healthy society, it is imperative that kids know how important community helpers are. In Lower Primary we expose our children to the citizens who take on different roles in the community and celebrate community helpers day. The Joy of giving is an enriching experience and a priceless feeling that gets one to realise the true meaning of life and its impact on others. In the upper primary, a myriad of service activities includes contributing to the community fridge to reduce food wastage and cover the hunger issue in the society; visiting old age homes, raising funds through craft bazaar, distributing seed bombs and many more.

As the saying goes “every charitable act is a stepping stone towards heaven,” the students of CPS Global embark on a gargantuan effort through crowdfunding/fundraising activities to aid differently abled people to live their dream.

Learning through experience and serving the community enhances their personal and interpersonal development. Our students engage in multifarious social impact initiatives and rallies to symbolise the element that they are a part of the society, taking care of the needy, preserving and protecting the natural resources. It includes cancer awareness campaign in collaboration with Adyar Cancer Institute, organ donation awareness rally in collaboration with Frontier Lifeline Hospital, stem cell donation awareness campaign in association with DATRI; nationwide ‘Rally for Rivers’ along with certain specific agenda like remodelling the abandoned suburban railway station in Chennai, coastal clean up projects and so on.

They also extend their learning beyond – by sharing their knowledge to teach the rural students, by improving the ambience of the surrounding, to empower themselves and earn the truest experiences that their efforts have netted them.

VOCAL & INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

The main thrust of performing arts at CPS Global is student enrichment and participation. We believe that all our students are musicians, they just need to find their musical voice, whether it is through singing or learning an instrument, composing their own music, exploring elements of music or sharing their own interpretations of the music they hear. Music is offered from Early Years through Upper Secondary. Students learn music as a part of the regular program till Grade 5. Beyond which they get to choose amongst Dance/Music/Theatre according to their interest.

Lower Primary music curriculum is designed to be fun-filled and joyful learning, so that learners will enjoy singing through actions as an individual and also as a group. At this level music becomes trans disciplinary connecting subjects like Math, Science and Social Science. Upper Primary students start learning various genres of music in different languages, where they begin to focus on voice, diction, intonation, rhythm and tempo. They are also introduced to musical instruments such as keyboard, guitar and tambourine.

Our Music curriculum for this age group covers a range of skills and styles, providing the opportunity for the less-experienced to discover what music really is, while still challenging those who have been learning vocal/instrument for many years. We recommend that learners experience music from their own culture as well as exploring music from other times and places so that they develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to contribute as musicians. It nurtures their individual and collective creativity. Instrumental learning phase now includes percussion music also. Learners in this group study music of different styles placed in their historical and cultural base. They start to recreate the music and compose new tracks through instruments enhancing their appreciation and enjoyment of music. Learners experiment with the latest music software available and produce digital albums as a team.

The school band consisting of young musicians takes shape beginning Grade 9. These young musicians compose, perform to the audience at all major events of the school. They also represent the school in competitions, and render music for the target audience for fundraising activities.

RHYTHM & DANCE

Dance is a creative outlet and is as important as exercise in the development of healthy children. Learning dance and movement patterns from an early age develops kinesthetic memory, strength and endurance. To nurture the whole spectrum of every individual, dance is taught as a part of the cocurricular activities to develop a greater range of movement whilst developing the ability to work within different spaces. Children start to collaborate with each other and also learn to use gestures as a means of communication. All those dance skills that were learnt during the entire course, will be showcased during the Grand Annual Day.

At CPS Global, students learn dance as a part of the regular program till Grade 5. Beyond which they get to choose amongst Dance/Music/Theatre according to their interest.

Lower Primary starts with House dance, easier to accommodate and learn at this age. CPS Global believes that these movement patterns develop kinaesthetic memory and also develops strength and endurance from an early age. As they move into upper primary, students start exploring freestyle, which in its most extreme form, is the very opposite of choreography. Our children are encouraged to improvise their moves on the spot that allows them to be flexible to use their imagination.

Students of Lower Secondary experiment with various dance forms like lyrical dance. The moves at this stage are dynamic, where they subtly focus on conveying feelings and emotions through movements. In this segment, students also learn to understand the cultural contexts of dance forms from global perspectives. They develop an aesthetic appreciation and start applying various elements of dance.

The senior students venture into learning bold dance moves and popular high energy dance forms. They are given opportunities to choreograph using various elements of dance. DRAMA & THEATRE

Communication, Creative thinking and Confidence are the three C’s that help students to problem-solve, think on their feet, share thoughts and ideas clearly. These are the skills that Developmental Drama builds in each child and that is the objective of the Drama & Theatre curriculum at CPS Global. The curriculum is tailor made and delivered with expertise by the Australian based Helen O’ Grady International. Students are taught diverse aspects from acting to theatre techniques through theory and practice and staging a production with the experience of real life situations. The learning is showcased through a theatre production by each segment once a year. Variety of programmes planned at school like pantomime, pretend play, tableau provide multiple opportunities to unveil their skills developed in Drama & Theatre classes.

Students can choose to appear for certification from Initial to Grade 8 levels of Trinity Speech and Drama based on their potential through an external celebration of bringing text to life. These assessments are fully accredited in the UK and recognised internationally in many other countries.

Drama classes are non-judgemental spaces that bring out the best in each child. They gain confidence to question, ideate, collaborate and accept each other’s suggestions for improvement. At CPS Global, primary students are introduced at an early stage to the expressive, meaningful and dynamic world of Theatre. The Primary Levels lay the foundation on building their confidence, skills of imagination and visualisation that contribute to creative thinking. Speech training at this stage helps children to build vocabulary with comprehension and understanding.

Lower Secondary

Middle and high school students are in a physiological phase of intense physical, mental and emotional growth and upheaval. This time of transition, though challenging, presents great opportunities for personal exploration and development. Dramatic and theatrical training at this stage offers students the tools and skills to master and deal with these changes confidently as they grow to young adulthood. The focus now shifts to understanding emotion, characterisation and plots. They are encouraged to choose the genre of their liking, script their thoughts, understand the nuances of developmental drama and showcase it to fellow students.

Senior School at CPS Global sees the emergence of Youth Theatre. Drama & Theatre here is student directed, student led and the teacher remains a facilitator only. They research aspects of the drama, build improvisation, put their scripts together, design stage, costume, music and direct their own productions. They also take the lead to train their juniors during the school events. The skills learnt and techniques honed are also used by the students to showcase their curriculum learning during La fenetre, a grand culmination event of learning that takes place at the end of every school year.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

What we learn becomes a part of who we are…

Learning from the world is the best way to learn as we are going to apply all we learn in the real world. The personal insights and self-knowledge gained in outdoor education contributes to the academic programs and aids students to manage situations they come across in life. A wide variety of experiences and activities are offered to meet the differing interests and developmental levels of our students. The school provides a beyond classroom learning environment that allows students to thrive as an individual. Educational trips play a crucial role in acquiring wider knowledge, cultural understanding and hand-on experience. Good planning precedes our outdoor trips. Careful attention is given while selecting the place of visit and to the trip itself with an appropriate follow up and evaluation. Outdoor trips are planned periodically to locations that are unique and cannot be duplicated in the classroom scenario to drive the concepts deeper.

Primary

Our lower primary children visit those places which provide authentic learning opportunities. A trip to a supermarket or a traffic island helps them understand the care that needs to be taken before buying anything from the supermarket or the rules to be followed on the road. This hands-on experience is showcased through socio dramatic plays which internalise the experiences of outdoor learning. This visual literacy ensures appropriate mapping of the content learnt in the classroom. Our upper primary students visit those places which allow them to understand the history, connect with the present times and visualise the future. A short trip to the rail museum takes them through the journey of locomotives – where it began, where it is and where it will be. The last part is achieved through a healthy discussion and reflection after they return from the field trip.

The outdoor learning at this stage becomes more focussed. The trips bring books to life and life to books.Our trips at this stage include service learning which focuses on the ‘socially beneficial’ aspect of the trip. Students now start reflecting on what they see around them,what it is that they can give back to society. The objective now is also to brush on their soft skills which require sharpening. Organic Farms, Horticulture Spots, Adyar Theosophical Society, Birla Planetarium, National Art Gallery, Dakshinachitra, Periyar Science and Technology Centre are the informative places that our students visit. The trips as is evident are planned to cater to a variety of student interests ranging from Art to biology to space science.

Upper Secondary

By the time students move into upper secondary school the outdoor learning has a specific objective. They visit the places as per the subject interest also along with trips aimed for the whole segment. It is time for the students to know how gas chromatography works or how language is used in the media. They observe, discern patterns and relationships, determine correlations and make evaluations, the students in effect are practicing the process of scientific inquiry first-hand.

Industrial visits are organised to understand the raw material procurement, factors affecting production, work assembly process, logistics and other aspects in order to aid them to experience it’s real-world application. The IAYP

The Award Programme originated in the United Kingdom in 1956 as the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (DEAS). The aim was to help young people bridge the gap between adolescence and adulthood, smoothly. It was introduced in India in 1962 and today it is called the International Award for Young People (IAYP).

This programme inspires youngsters to

  • engage in a balanced agenda of voluntary, non-competitive and self-development activities
  • encourage self-exploration, autonomy, determination and service to their community
  • emphasise the efforts being made to work with ‘at Risk’ youth and those with social, physical, economic challenges

YES Centre

CPS Global School acquired the Youth Engaging Society (YES) Centre Status in 2017 to offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award for students of age group 14 to 25 years who wish to take up challenges.

Beyond the Domains of Education

At CPS Global School, this non-formal education is imparted through the International Award for Young People (IAYP) programme that makes learning experiential. The school offers all three levels: Bronze, Silver & Gold, and four sections; Skills, Service, Physical Recreation and Adventurous Journey which encourage personal discovery and growth, independence, tenacity and a responsibility to each student as well as their neighbourhood. The trade-off has been very rewarding; students have rediscovered themselves in terms of behaviour, attitude essential for an exemplary citizen

The Award as a Driving force

The fruits of this endeavour are sweeter than our expectations. CPS Global always worked upon the thought of nurturing global citizens. The approach that we sought, which proudly involves IAYP, has facilitated us on this path through easy learning. More than 100 students from our school registered for the Bronze and Silver awards in a span of three years and emerged successful by meeting all the requirements. When they earn their award, they receive internationally acclaimed recognition of their achievements, gain new skills and experiences; make new friends, and build their all-round character, the traits that are sought after by both universities and employers alike.

SCHOOL CLUBS

School clubs are an exciting extension of learning that happens beyond the classroom walls. It allows students to embrace the activities they enjoy the most and sharpen their interests. CPS Global student-led clubs are for the students, by the students and of the students. This is where they get to plan the events on their own with the minimal guidance of the facilitators. Student Club Secretaries are democratically elected and have a tenure of one year normally.

Club activities conducted through the year also help students to groom their leadership and social skills. Students of Grade 6 upwards get an opportunity to participate in the club activities and it is voluntary. They can take part at the most in two school clubs.

Plentitude of Clubs like Literary Club, Enviro Club, Math Club, Language Club, Art Club, Theatre Club, Photography Club, Debate Club, Coding Club, Robotics Club, Animation Club, MUN Club, Law Club, SEEDS Club, Financial Literacy Club, SDG Club, Interact Club have an unique flavour and cater to the varied interests of the students.

The year-long activities come to an end with a spectacular show of learning on La fenetre, a day of a grand culmination.
