People live within communities, but what defines them? Who are the individuals behind the neighbourhoods they call home, and what brings them together?

As part of their Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) journey, the DP-2 students of CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai, had the opportunity to explore the significance of community engagement through a meaningful service initiative. Guided by their CAS mentor, the students embraced the spirit of philanthropy by organising the “Joy of Giving” programme, an initiative designed to foster compassion, social responsibility, and the value of giving back to society.

The initiative centred on a visit to Sevalaya Old Age Home in Thiruvallur, where the students had the opportunity to interact with senior citizens and contribute to their well-being. As part of the programme, the students prepared a comprehensive list of essential provisions, including hygiene products, flour, rice, sugar, salt, and spices. The list was shared across the school community, encouraging contributions from Early Years students, teachers, and other members of CPS Global School. The enthusiastic participation of the entire school community reflected a collective commitment to kindness and social responsibility.

The visit proved to be an enriching and memorable experience for the DP-2 students. Their interactions with the elderly residents encouraged them to reflect on the importance of gratitude, empathy, and compassion. The experience reinforced the understanding that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

However, the initiative extended beyond the act of donating essential provisions. The most significant takeaway was the importance of human connection and companionship. Working collaboratively towards a shared purpose strengthened the students’ sense of collective responsibility, while their interactions with the residents offered valuable insights into the emotional and social dimensions of community life.

The visit also drew attention to an often-overlooked concern: loneliness among the elderly. The students recognised that companionship, meaningful conversations, and genuine human interaction could be just as valuable as material contributions. The smiles, conversations, and moments of shared happiness highlighted the importance of making individuals feel acknowledged, respected, and valued.

Ultimately, the “Joy of Giving” initiative enabled the DP-2 students of CPS Global School to recognise that communities are sustained not merely through geographical proximity or material support, but through empathy, companionship, collaboration, and meaningful human relationships. The experience served as a reminder that the true essence of a community lies in the connections people nurture and the care they extend towards one another.

Do we truly know our community?
