Guest speakers are known for inspiring students with their presentations, speeches and
thoughtful words of advice. During the present times of online teaching, organising master
classes and inviting eminent guest lecturers has been an innovative way of breaking the
monotony of normal schedule. The CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai initiated the Master
Class Series with IBDP year 1 & 2 students of Environmental System and Societies (ESS)
attending the pioneer session on 18 th June 2021. The guest lecturer was Ms. Sheetal Bagati,
Facilitator of Environmental Management (EM) and Environmental System and societies
(ESS) at Symbiosis International School, Pune. The guest lecture session of the master
class was preceded by a welcome speech by Head of School, Ms. Jayu Ganesh in which the
guest speaker was introduced to the audience followed by a brief reminiscence on her role in
inculcating the habit of sustainable-living amongst the student community at Pune. Later, the
session was taken forward by Ms. Bagati who emphasized on the importance of addressing
global environmental issues with localized examples which would not just provide a greater
understanding but also help students develop a holistic view about the environmental issues
to help frame Research Questions for the Internal Assessment (IA) for the IBDP. The
speaker further stressed the methodology of investigating the IA need not necessarily rely
solely on the primary research but encouraged the students to embark on involving reliable
published data keeping in view of the handicaps owing to the prevailing pandemic situation.
The students’ enthusiastic participation during the session proved their keen interest. The
speaker then encouraged the students to send a 100-word essay on the topic of their
interest as a follow-up of the session standing akin to the famous quote – “Diligent follow-up
and follow-through will set you apart from the crowd and communicate excellence.” The
invigorating session it was indeed on creating awareness about the environment with the
promise of many such sessions in the coming days.
