Sports play an integral part of our lives by keeping us fit and healthy while building strong communities and boosting morale. Sports have traditionally served as a global unifier: the race, religion, gender and the socio-economic status take a backseat when the crowd congregate to experience the frenzy of the competition. The recently concluded Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics stand testimony to the cohesive power of humans transforming the world to a better place. The students of CPS Global School Thirumazhisai, with joy and enthusiasm, came together to celebrate the National Sports Day on August 31 st , 2021. National Sports Day pays tribute to the legendary hockey wizard, Major Dhyan Chand and spreads awareness on the importance of sports in everyone’s lives.

The event at CPS Global School unfolded with the school prayer followed by an informative speech about the significance of the day by the Sports and Wellness Captain, who gave a vivid picture about the life of and the sheer dedication and prowess of major Dhyan Chand in
Olympics that has inspired generations of athletes. Later on, the Assistant Sports and Wellness Captain impressed on all the importance of sports and fitness being the key to physical and mental well-being.

Next came the interesting part where the phenomenal success of the Indian contingent at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was shown through crisply curated video, inspiring the students to give their best in the inter-house sports quiz completion that followed. A preliminary elimination round had been conducted for CAIE 3 to IBDP 1 and the top scorers competed against each other in the final round of quiz. The team effort was at its pinnacle during the main round of quiz with the Junior Quiz being very interactive with their enthusiastic responses and the Senior Quiz participants failed to hide their jubilance as they competed against other teams. Once the Senior and Junior Quiz were over, the teacher’s quiz was conducted that unleashed the inner child that was dormant within them; which was very much evident in the enthusiasm they displayed while answering the questions. Overall, the quizzes were a resounding success for all the participants representing the various houses.

The entire school was brimming with excitement witnessing the marathon of events. The Head of School, in her address, reinforced the importance of the sports and encouraged the students to consider it as the need of the hour during this pandemic situation. The event
concluded the declaration of the results with Canopus, Plasma and Diadem winning the Junior, senior and Teachers Quiz respectively and finally the playing of the national anthem; in the true Olympic traditions.

The event resounded Nelson Mandela’s words: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.”
