As part of the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign, Southern Railway, in collaboration with NGos like ExNoRa International Foundation, student volunteers and public, organised a mega cleanliness drive under the theme ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ on the 1st of October at Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station.
The initiative brought together young volunteers from across the city to promote cleanliness, sanitation, personal hygiene, environmental awareness and active public participation in maintaining clean public spaces. Our IAYP volunteers joined this collective effort, embracing the opportunity to translate the spirit of Voluntary Service into meaningful action.
The campaign was led by Mr Shailendar Singh, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Chennai Division, Southern Railway, who administered the Swachhata Pledge. Volunteers were then equipped with masks, gloves and caps, along with essential cleaning tools such as brooms and garbage bags, before setting out to clean areas in and around the station.
Working alongside fellow volunteers, our IAYP participants contributed with enthusiasm and purpose, experiencing how collective responsibility and community participation can help create cleaner, healthier and more welcoming public spaces.
