“The greatest adventure is not in reaching the destination, but in discovering your own potential along the journey.”
As part of the International Award for Young People (IAYP) programme, students of CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai, embarked on a five-day Adventurous Journey to Spice Valley Camp, Kodaikanal. The journey aimed to develop determination, leadership, teamwork, independence, and environmental responsibility through hands-on outdoor learning. The adventure began with an introduction to the IAYP programme, trekking ethics, and outdoor responsibilities led by the Indiahikes team. Working in teams, students pitched tents, learned wilderness fire-making techniques using natural tinder, and carried eco-bags to collect litter along the trekking trails. Students strengthened their outdoor skills through wilderness first aid, map reading, compass navigation, and a visit to the Paliyar Tribal Community, gaining insights into its history, culture, and way of life. A challenging trek to Avocado Hills Peak tested their determination, while writing letters to their future selves encouraged personal reflection. Back at the campsite, groups prepared dinner together before participating in a treasure hunt that strengthened teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability.
The final days introduced advanced survival skills, including understanding the difference between wilderness and urban medicine, practising essential survival knots, learning wildlife conservation laws, constructing a simple water filtration system, identifying cardinal directions using natural methods, and enjoying a memorable stargazing session. Throughout the journey, students conserved water, relied on solar power, maintained daily logbooks, and wrote reflection journals to record their experiences and personal growth. The Adventurous Journey concluded with students returning home with greater confidence, stronger leadership skills, practical survival knowledge, and a deeper respect for nature.
