Some learning experiences are remembered not for the answers they provide, but for the curiosity they ignite. Such was the privilege enjoyed by five students of Chennai Public School, Anna Nagar, during their interaction with Dr. Sultan Ahmed Ismail, affectionately known as The Vermicompost Man of India. What began as an interview soon evolved into an enriching conversation that transcended the boundaries of a conventional question-and-answer session.
From the very outset, Dr. Ismail fostered an atmosphere of open dialogue and thoughtful exchange. Drawing upon more than five decades of pioneering research in earthworm ecology and sustainable agriculture, he shared invaluable insights into environmental conservation, scientific research, and the importance of questioning conventional perspectives.
One of the most thought-provoking discussions centred on the responsible use of plastic, where he emphasised that sustainable solutions lie in mindful usage rather than outright elimination. The students also gained a deeper understanding of vermicomposting and its role in converting organic waste into nutrient-rich compost that enhances soil health, supports plant growth, and reduces dependence on chemical fertilisers.
Beyond his contributions to environmental science, Dr. Ismail spoke about his inspiring research journey, his work on an anti-inflammatory drug patent, and the ideas explored in his published books. He patiently addressed every question, encouraging the students to pursue originality, cultivate a spirit of inquiry, and transform their passions into meaningful pursuits.
The interaction offered far more than scientific knowledge. It inspired the students to appreciate the value of research, independent thinking, and environmental stewardship while reinforcing that authentic learning flourishes through meaningful conversations with those who have dedicated their lives to discovery and innovation.
