“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children.” – Wendell Berry
As part of our commitment to experiential learning beyond the classroom, Class 5 – IGCSE Year 2 students of CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai visited Dakshinachitra Heritage Museum for an Environmental Awareness Workshop. The visit provided students with an opportunity to connect with nature, explore sustainable practices, and understand their role in protecting the environment. The day began with an engaging Tree Trail, where students explored various trees, including the banyan and neem. Surrounded by nature, they observed unique characteristics of the trees and participated in an interactive quiz, fostering a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and environmental conservation.
Students were fascinated by an innovative water generation system that extracts water from air through condensation before filtering it for use. This eye-opening experience highlighted the importance of water conservation and aligned with SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. The learners also participated in a creative tote bag painting activity, designing colourful eco-friendly bags while discussing the importance of reducing plastic usage. This activity promoted sustainable choices and supported SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.Another key highlight was an interactive session on the 4Rs – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Through a decomposition challenge, students investigated how long different materials such as plastic covers, batteries, foil, and cotton fabric take to decompose, reinforcing the need for responsible waste management and SDG 13: Climate Action.
The immersive ocean conservation exhibit, coupled with a treasure hunt, enabled students to understand the impact of pollution on marine ecosystems and the need to protect them, aligning with SDG 14: Life Below Water. Set amidst Dakshinachitra’s vibrant traditional surroundings, the workshop was a memorable experience that transformed learning into action. The visit empowered students to make informed choices, adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives, and become thoughtful advocates for a greener and more sustainable future.
