Learning place value became a hands-on adventure for our Grade 2 learners through a fun and engaging Pebble Place Value Activity. Using colourful pebbles and a specially designed place value chart with Hundreds, Tens, and Ones represented as concentric circles, learners explored the concept of 3-digit numbers in an exciting way.
Each child dropped a handful of pebbles onto the chart. Wherever the pebbles landed—Hundreds, Tens, or Ones—the number of pebbles in each section determined the corresponding digit, creating a unique 3-digit number. As learners counted and recorded their numbers, they gained a deeper understanding of how the position of a digit determines its value.
This interactive activity transformed an abstract mathematical concept into a concrete learning experience. Through observation, counting, and discussion, students developed stronger place value skills, improved number sense, and discovered that Mathematics can be both meaningful and enjoyable. The classroom was filled with excitement as every handful of pebbles revealed a new number and a new learning opportunity!
