CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai organised a study tour for students of CAIE 6 to IGYR1 and IBYR1 to “WATER MATTERS”, a Smithsonian-curated exhibition held at The Periyar Science and Technology Centre. The exhibition was a treasure trove of information which enlightened our students about how civilizations began in river basins and the unique properties of water. One of the exhibits explained how water is an unusual liquid; in the solid state it is lighter than in the liquid state and hence ice floats. The students also learnt how water shapes the climate of a place. The movement of water around and between oceans, land and Earth’s atmosphere causes weather and climate. The pictures of main water bodies in Chennai like the Adyar River and the depletion of ground water through deep bore wells was also explained through the posters. Water in art was also beautifully demonstrated by a volunteer using a glass harp. Other interesting facts like how people from Ancient Egypt to India used ritual dances to conjure rain were explained. Our students then had a walk through the scientific displays ranging from aircrafts, various types of engines and models of ASLV AND SLV3 by ISRO. Science on a sphere was one of a kind show that had a room sized, global display system that uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six foot diameter sphere, analogous to a giant animated globe. The students thoroughly enjoyed the surreal experience of watching the model of the Earth. Our learners then watched our solar system in the planetarium. The students were flabbergasted as they were taken through a virtual tour to all the planets and the Sun. The experience was nothing short of being a part of thrilling Sci-Fi movie. This study tour again is a testimony that CPS Global, Thirumazhisai provides every opportunity for our students to experience learning outside classrooms.
