Mid way through the week, students at CPS Global School, Thirumazhisai pressed the pause button on regular activities to attend a workshop on Safety and Security in our Communities (at home and at school) by Ms Uma Krishnamurthy, Assistant Programme Officer, UNICEF (New Delhi), about the importance of preparedness in the event of any disaster (natural or man-made). Inspired in part by the effects students had seen during the Chennai floods of 2015, during the hands-on session students felt empowered by learning about the meaning of safety and the impact of being aware of one’s own surroundings. Students also learned to identify potential risks, and how to take corresponding action. The second part of the session engaged a group discussion as to how to identify key areas of improvement at home, school, and during the transition space between home and school and which steps they can contribute to make their surroundings safer. After the GD, each group confidently partook in the knowledge sharing with the whole audience. The workshop leader enthused the students to create charts on their experience at the workshop and display to spread awareness. Indeed, a stitch in time saves nine!
