Little hands need to develop dexterity and strength. These types of “play” activities and manipulation skills will actually help prepare a child to hold and use a crayon. The ability to do so is the first step in learning to colour, draw and ultimately write. Of course using q-tips to paint with is a wonderful and simple way to help develop a child’s fine motor skills. The fine ‘pinch’ grip required to hold the small q-tip in place and to move it around the paper to paint is ideal for building on those smaller muscles of the hand.
Q-tips are the perfect mini paint brush for little ones. They fit well in kids hands and are smooth to paint with. Our ELP 1 children were given the outline of an Octopus picture and a palate of colours to decorate and paint with q-tips.
The kids chose their favourite colour to paint the tentacles of the Octopus. Each kid took their own time to colour the octopus and it was amazing to watch them work with the colours confidently. Few started out painting nice and neat, and then chose to paint quickly with large motions. The little ones loved this activity that let them explore their creativity.Once the students had completed the activity, the room was filled with colourful Octopuses much to the joy of their creators.
